It is no longer news that moderate exercise for at least three days a week can make a big difference in your health and well-being. A recent research has shown that moderate and consistent physical activity can reduce your risk of having a colon cancer by about 50 percent, being active plays a major role in lowering the risk of cancers in general.

Please don’t ignore small active steps because they all count, indulging in activities like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther from your destination and complete your journey on foot or walk a distance or even ride your bike to work can be a all you need to stay healthy. Please stop making excuses for being in-active! – See below for more ways to stay active:

Energize yourself

  • Schedule physical activity for times in the day or week when you have the most energy.
  • Pay attention to how you feel after physical activity. You’ll be surprised by how long a short exercise can sustain your energy levels.

Bring a friend

  • Ask friends and family to exercise with you, and plan social activities involving exercise. Plan a party with physically active games and activities for your family and your children’s friends.
  • Develop new friendships with physically active people. Join a group, like a dance group, biking group or even running club.

Stay motivated

  • Plan ahead. Make physical activity a regular part of your family’s daily or weekly schedule and write it on a family activity calendar. Keep track of your progress with an exercise chart.
  • Exercise with friends who are at the same skill level as you, and create opportunities for your children to be active with active friends.

Use available resources

  • Select activities that require minimal facilities or equipment, such as walking, jogging, jumping rope or stretching and strengthening movements.
  • Identify inexpensive, convenient resources available in your community, such as education, park and recreation and work site programs.

Build new skills

  • Find a friend who is willing to teach you some new skills.
  • Take a class to develop new skills and enroll your children in classes, such as swimming, gymnastics or tennis.

Exercise in your and beyond helps prevent frailty and falls, and it’s important for your cognitive function. If you have a period of ill health, try to keep mobile, if possible. Strength and fitness can decline rapidly if you are bed bound or very inactive, which can make it hard to get back to previous levels.
